Daniel Gallagher 1912
A Carrier's Death.
FALL FROM HIS LOAD. HIS DEAD BODY FOUND.
The town of Dubbo was thrown into a mild state of excitement on Saturday morning when the news was circulated that a man named Daniel Gallagher  had been found dead beside his waggon on the flat at the rear of the Royal Hotel. About 7.45 a.m. a laborer named James Ward was passing the waggon, when he noticed some of the horses tearing a couple of bags of chaff about. He went across to the waggon,  and was horrified to see the body of a man, with blood oozing from his head, lying at the rear of the team. He caught the man by the hand, and found that it was stiff and cold. He at once informed the police, who had the dead body removed to the hospital morgue. A magisterial enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death was held on Saturday afternoon, when the following facts were adduced:--Deceased was employed by Mr. F. W. E. Colbran, of Eumungerie, and had driven a waggon loaded with chaff into Dubbo on the evening of Friday. After out-spanning and feeding his horses he visited Mrs. Shumack's Hotel and had several drinks, but when he left the hotel at about 11 o'clock he was not drunk and appeared perfectly capable of looking after himself. Just before leaving the hotel he paid for two drinks and purchased a small flask of whisky, and received 16s 6d change out of £1, which he tendered in payment. The flask of whisky (unopened) was found at the waggon, and in the pocket of deceased 16s 6d in silver was also found. Dr. Burkitt, who examined the body at the morgue, said that there was a large horse-shoe shaped cut on the head. He did not think this was caused by any instrument. Death, in his opinion, was due to hemorrhage within the brain, and he thought it was possible for the wound to have been caused by a severe fall upon some hard substance. There were no fractures. The unfortunate man was about 48 years of age, and was a native of Spring Creek, near Orange. He was well-known in the Dubbo district as a hard-working, respectable man. He has several brothers and sisters, one of whom, James Gallagher, resides at Kookaburra, near Dubbo. The theory is that Gallagher climbed on to his load by means of a ladder, which was found lying across his legs, and after throwing down a couple of bags of chaff with which to feed his horses, essayed to reach the ground by means of the ladder, and by some means this gave way, precipitating the unfortunate man with considerable force to the ground. After hearing evidence theDeputy Coroner (Mr. G. H. Taylor, J.P.) found that deceased, Daniel Gallagher, accidentally met his death by falling from a loaded waggon at Dubbo on Friday, April 26th. The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Dubbo Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. D. Brophy officiating at the graveside. Mr. J. R. Tighe had charge of the funeral arrangements.
