Mr E A Hewitt 1954 The death occurred last week at the Dubbo Base Hospital of Mr. Edward Albert Hewitt, aged 80, of Railway Street, Eumungerie. A native of Richmond, the late Mr. Hewitt was a well known sportsman and a highly respected resident of Eumungerie. For many years he was prominent in cricket circle, acting as wicket keeper. A retired Railway employee, deceased spent most of his life in the Eumungerie district. He was married at Dubbo 50 years ago to Miss Alice Ewers, who survives him, with four daughters: Doris (Mrs. G. Leary, of Melbourne), Beulah (Mrs. W. McMillan, of Eumungerie), Lillah (Mrs. W. Holy, of Melbourne) and Bell (Mrs. A. P. Jones, of Wollongong). One son, Douglas, died In a prisoner-of-war camp at Ambon during World War II. There was a very large gathering at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Dubbo, where the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. K. Dyster. Trevor Robert Haines 1940 INFANT'S DEATH Trevor Robert, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Haines of Eumungerie, died in the Dubbo District Hospital on Thursday morning. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Dubbo cemetery on Thurs day afternoon, the Rev. C. W. Leavers conducting the obsequies. C. J. MRS. ELLA HARTLEY 1926 Mrs. Ella Hartley, wife of Mr. W. Hartley, of Macquarie-street, brought to the Dubbo District Hospital on Monday suffering with kidney trouble,died on Wednesday. She was 40 years of age. Burial took place yesterday in the Church of England section of the Dubbo cemetery, the Rev. C. W. Leavers reading the burial service. The funeral, which was carried out by Mr. E. Lees, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Mrs. Hartley leaves a widower, but no family. She was a daughter of Mrs. Cullen, of Cobbora-street. Mrs. Pithers and Mrs. Green (Dubbo) are sisters, L. Cullen (Dubbo), J. Cullen (Sydney), and Henry (Eumungerie) are brothers. Arthur Hewett (Sketa) 1992 The death last week of Arthur (Ernest) Hewitt, 78, better known as Sketa, was a sad loss to the Eumungerie people. Sketa, who had worked for the Wheat Board all his life, was born in Victoria. He was one of seven boys and two girls, and has one brother and one sister surviving. He worked for the Victorian Wheat Board early in his life. He was married and had two sons, one of which is still alive and lives in New Zealand. He moved with the Wheat Board to Dubbo in 1956, and worked in the district. He moved to Eumungerie at the end of the 60's. Sketa settled here and worked for the Wheat Board until his retirement 13 years ago. He made many friends, many predeceased him. Sketa had a longing to help people no matter what was asked of him. He would say "yes" and have a go no matter how bad he felt. He had a small tractor, with the attachments and would be seen carting water during drought periods from the local bore to anyone in need. Sketa loved children, and would be seen giving something to them to brighten their way on many occasions. He would love a social drink with the boys and was quite a character with his sayings and gimmicks - always something to brighten up your life. he also had quite a good voice for the songs at local parties. Sketa is the uncle of Colleen Hewitt, the well-known singer. Sketa will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially Doris Nagel and family, who he had a great friendship with since he arrived at Eumungerie. MR. ROBERT E. HOWE 1941 Mr. Robert Edward IIowe (65), Well known Eumungerie farmer, died at the Dubbo District Hospital last week. The late Mr. Howe, who was a native of Mudgee, had resided in Queensland for a number of years, and served with the A.I.F. in the Great War. He had resided in the Eunmungerie district since his return from active service. His wife predeceased him about 18 months ago. Thp late Mr. Howe is survived by one sister and two brothers. The funeral took place at Dubbo, when interment was made in the Church of England portion of the cemetery. Members of the Dubbo sub- branch of the R.S.S.A.I. League attended. Rev. Canor, C. W. WILLIAM BLACKIE (BILL) HENDRY 1966 The death occurred at the Dubbo Hospital on the 4th of September of William Blackie Hendry, of Gipps Street, Dubbo, at the age of 71 years. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Eileen (Mrs. Bill Jacka, Yanta-bulla), one son, William (of Warren) and two grandchildren. His funeral left the Presbyterian Church after a service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday for the Memorial Park Cemetery. The late Mr. Hendry served in the first World War and at the time of his death was a life member and a vice-president of the Eumungerie-Cobocco R.S.L. Sub-Branch. Rev. J. Gowdie, conducted the church and graveside ceremonies and the Eumungerie-Cobocco R.S.L. members formed a guard of honour at the Church and graveside. Western Herald 30 September 1966
Mr. Victor Branscombe Hall 1947 The death occurred at a Mosman hospital yesterday of Mr. Victor Branscombe Hall, at the age of 89 years. Coming from an early pioneering family, the late Mr. Hall was a retired grazier. He was born at Lake George, and while still a young man rode from there to Bathurst overlanding cattle. He took over the management of the station property, 'Willaroona' and together with his brother, Charles, later purchased this property. During his residence at 'Willaroona,' he acquired further land at Buckaroo. Disposing of his property there, he took up land at 'Lockesley,' Nyngan, and came to Dubbo in 1934 to settle on 'Hillside,' Eumungerie. Surviving members of the original family are brothers George, living in retirement at Gordon, Sydney, Charles ('Willaroona', Henry (Buckeroo) and sisters Florence and Anne, (Gordon). Two brothers of the original family are deceased. He is survived by the following family: Victor, Eric, John, Robert, Kath-leen (Mrs. H. P. Bradford, Dubbo) and Ruth (Mrs. Dutton, Neutral Bay, Sydney). The funeral took place to the Northern Suburbs Crematorium this morning. Mrs. Grace Hobbs The death occurred at her residence, Dalton Street, in the early hours of this morning of Mrs. Grace Hobbs, aged 80 years. She was relict of the late Mr. Henry Thomas Hobbs, who predeceased her in 1935. The late Mrs. Hobbs was a devoted Salvationist and was a member of the Home League. She was well-known and highly respected throughout the district, and a large grown-up family survives to mourn her passing. The funeral took place from the Salvation Army Citadel at 3 o'clock this afternoon, Major Brooks conducting the service. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of C. J. George Howard 1897 George F. Howard, a selector at Coalbaggie, has died from the effects of a curious accident. He was driving his cow along when his horse ran him against the post of a wire fence, the sharp edge of which tore the flesh from the bone of his leg almost from the knee to the foot. Mr. Howard rode in this condition seven miles and was then placed in a buggy and brought to Dubbo. His condition became serious and three doctors held a consultation, but mortification set in and Mr. Howard died this morning. The Maitland Daily 9 February 1897
